The economy of the city is the second largest within Canada according to GDP and is the largest within Quebec. Today Montreal is considered a really livable city. It is a centre of commerce, aerospace, finance, pharmaceuticals, global affairs and technology and is the head office of the Montreal Exchange. It is a leader in culture, film and design. Tourism is an essential industry.

Toronto ranked 12th. Montreal has even been called North America's number one city by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).
